Single-Lumen or Double-Lumen Aspiration Needle? Recent Evidence Reassesses the Difference.

A critical review published in Life (2025) evaluated five comparative studies investigating single-lumen and double-lumen aspiration needles used in IVF/ICSI oocyte retrieval.

 

The review reported:

- No significant difference in the number of retrieved oocytes or mature (MII) oocytes.

- Shorter procedure time when using single-lumen aspiration needles.

- Comparable fertilization rate, high-quality embryo rate, clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, and live birth rate between the two needle designs.

- Continued clinical value of double-lumen needles in selected cases where follicular flushing may be considered, particularly in patients with very low ovarian reserve.

 

These findings highlight the importance of selecting aspiration devices according to clinical indication rather than routine preference, while supporting evidence-based decision-making throughout the IVF procedure.
